Introduction to Scattering Amplitudes Lecture 1: QCD and the Spinor-Helicity Formalism

چکیده

Scattering amplitudes take surprisingly simple forms in theories such as quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and general relativity. This simplicity indicates deep symmetry. Recently, it has become possible to explain some of this symmetry. I will describe these insights and show how to derive amplitudes efficiently and elegantly. Key new ideas involve using complexified momentum, exploring singular behavior, and seeking clues in so-called twistor geometry. Complete amplitudes can be produced recursively. This streamlined approach is being applied in searches for new physics in high-energy particle colliders. Lecture 1: Color quantum numbers can be set aside. Helicity amplitudes have elegant expressions in terms of spinors. MHV (maximally helicity violating) amplitudes are the simplest.

HELICITY AND PLANAR AMPLITUDES IN PION-PROTON SCATTERING AT 6.0 GeV/c

In addition to optimal conditions, invariant laws of Lorentz, parity and time reversal are imposed to find the relation between observables (spin rotation parameters) and bilinear combination of helicity amplitudes in pion-proton elastic scattering at 6.0 GeV/c. By normalizing the differential cross-section to unity, the magnitudes of helicity amplitudes and the angle between them are dete...

S@M, a mathematica implementation of the spinor-helicity formalism

In this paper we present the package S@M (Spinors@Mathematica) which implements the spinor-helicity formalism in Mathematica. The package allows the use of complex-spinor algebra along with the multipurpose features of Mathematica. The package defines the spinor objects with their basic properties along with functions to manipulate them. It also offers the possibility of evaluating the spinoria...

Scattering amplitudes with massive fermions using BCFW recursion

We study the QCD scattering amplitudes for q̄q → gg and q̄q → ggg where q is a massive fermion. Using a particular choice of massive fermion spinor we are able to derive very compact expressions for the partial spin amplitudes for the 2 → 2 process. We then investigate the corresponding 2 → 3 amplitudes using the BCFW recursion technique. For the helicity conserving partial amplitudes we again de...

Progress in One - Loop Qcd Computations

We review progress in calculating one-loop scattering amplitudes required for next-to-leading-order corrections to QCD processes. The underlying technical developments include the spinor helicity formalism, color decompositions, supersymmetry, string theory, factorization and unitarity. We provide explicit examples illustrating these techniques. To appear in Annual Reviews of Nuclear and Partic...

Recursive Approach to One-loop QCD Matrix Elements

Recently, a “weak-weak” duality, between N = 4 super Yang-Mills and a topological string theory propagating in twistor space, has been proposed [1] implying an identical perturbative S-matrix for the two theories. The existence of a duality between the two theories implies a surprising structure within the S-matrix of gauge theory. This has inspired considerable progress in computing scattering...
